Young people in this era are influenced by Social Media and the Internet. It is a parent's responsibility to make time to teach their children and adolescents about the holy life and how to avoid dangerous and immoral Internet sites that threaten their sense of peace, maturity, and sexual purity.
Parents must take the time to explain to their children and adolescents how the sites can be accessed by accident and what they must do if this happens. Parents must also explain the importance of avoiding immoral Internet sites, even if they have been accessed by accident, and what they must do if this does happen. Tell them they must come to you and tell you what happened so you can help them.
The Catholic faith provides the Catechism of the Catholic Church to help educate parents, and their children and adolescents, about the beliefs of the Catholic faith. The Encyclicals of the Popes, or the Letters the Popes have written to guide us in our faith, also provide beautiful explanations of our Catholic faith and can be found by searching for writings under the Pope's specific name. These writings include those of Pope Leo of the late 1800s, through our current Pope, Pope Francis.
The education of our children and adolescents cannot be left to the culture. Caring, concerned parents must make time to explain their values and morals to their children and adolescent. They must understand and communicate these values and their value system, finding support for their beliefs from resources at their Church or from other Catholics or Catholic websites and programming. They must explain their beliefs in simple, calm conversations with their children and adolescents to help them understand their Catholic values and beliefs. These parents are also available for any follow-up conversations or questions their children or adolescents have after the discussion takes place.
You may decide to reach out to your Church and ask them to offer classes to help parents find resources that will be helpful to talk about moral issues with their children and adolescents. You may ask for the formation of a Parent Group to help you and other parents understand the importance of your guidance in the life of your children and adolescents at this important time in our world.
Remember to pray and ask God for the insight needed to help you become a better parent and to teach your children and adolescents about living a holy life. Pray and ask God for the grace to help your children or adolescents understand our Catholic values and the virtuous, holy life. Say the Rosary and ask the Virgin Mary for her help.
